Portland – Jake’s Grill

Part of the McCormick & Schmick chain, which is based here, Jake’s Grill offers a menu similar to other M&S outlets, seafood, beef, and sandwiches. I opted for the “Kobe” Burger, which is, as Ihave whined about before here, really “Kobe-style”, or even “American raised Kobe”, and not actually Kobe Beef, not at $13 for (est) 6 oz of burger and accompaniments. The menu calls for their burger to be served with carmelized onions, bacon, and blue cheese, I asked them to hold the onions, and what you see below is exactly how it was presented from the kitchen, with ‘adequate’ fries (resembling food service offerings), a mini-ramakin of ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and bread and butter pickle slices. (Dill, please, on my plate). No other condiments were offered, though I imagine one could request them. I wanted to savor the flavor of the meat (and the blue cheese). (Kinda skimpy with that, fellas). But the club soda with lime was nice!

I had asked the waitress to tell the chef to prepare it to his recommendation, and it was served medium rare, which was fine. Trembling with anticipation, I lifted the first bite to my salivating lips, bit down, chewed, noted the smooth texture, and then…………..and then……………..my taste buds recoiled with the understanding that the chef had seasonsed this puck, and not with a simple pinch of salt and pepper like most chefs would……….no dammit, this burger swirled with the taste of onion powder, or possibly minced dehydrated onion.

Bummer. This may be to your liking, however, to each their own, but it’s not for me.

“Who’s your momma? Who’s your daddy? Who’s your pusher with the patty?” asks Burger Jones.

Got a jones on for a burger? I guess you go to Burger Jones to have that itch scratched. When my brother goes on a quest for the ultimate Pepper Cheeseburger, he apparently leaves no bun unturned. Burger Jones calls itself a “restaurant and cocktail bar”, and what combo could be better? BJ is located in a spruced-up former Applebee’s at 3200 West Lake Street in Minneapolis, open 11A-1A, seven days a week, and YES! they have poutine! If you can’t get there, buy a shirt, I did. And BTW? A grand time was had by all in attendance.

Duluth, MN – Black Woods On The Lake

One of three local locations for this mini-chain, the “Lake” location opened in 1997, with the aim of having small-town cafe charm, with the menu of more sophisticated restaurants. The Duluth location, at 26th Avenue East and London Road, sits on a promontory overlooking Lake Superior, with views spanning from the harbor to the Eastern Horizon. Menu specialities include Minnesota’s favorite fish, Walleye, served three ways; rotisserie chicken, wood-fire grilled pizzas, and “Famous” burgers, like the Pepperjack Cheeseburger ( Menu note: Jimmy’s famous burger is hand-formed and blended with roasted red pepper and Asiago cheese. Pepperjack cheese rides on top of this breaded and fried Black Woods specialty).

Duluth, MN – The Pickwick

A favorite of locals and travelers alike, the Pickwick is now being operated by the 4th generation of the Wisocki family, continuous operators since 1914. The bar actually opened earlier, within the plant of the Fitger’s Brewing Complex, but relocated next door and took the new name in 1914. With white oak wood interiors, beautiful wall paintings, and commanding views of Lake Superior, the “Wick” as it is known locally, is known for its preparartions of local fish, prime USDA beef, and hand-crafted cocktails. Be sure to start with a basket of onion rings! (Can you spot my grandfather, father and uncle in the Prohibition photo?)

Duluth, MN – The Peppercheese Burger Shootout!

My brother is on a personal quest to find the best peppercheese burger in Duluth, MN. Today, the “old-timer” Pickwick (open since 1914), was paired against the new kid on the block (around for a mere thirty years), Grandmas’s Saloon & Grill. Hands down, he says the “Wick” rules. I wonder if he was influenced by the side of the world’s greatest onion rings? Eager to hear of your continued exploits, bro, what’s next, Guppy’s? (BTW, beautiful shots!)

Back to “Eat – An Oyster Bar” today, in PDX on North Williams. Second visit, and every bit as nice as first time. Catfish po-boy with “spot on” collard greens and red beans. This guy knows his stuff!

Portland – AJs on the Rails

We were walking up Morrison and stumbled upon this place, which is apparently a coffee roaster w/ multiple locations locally, but offers a full food menu here. Of course what caught my eye was the sign in the window, these folksknow their priorities! (And mine). In the mood for just a light bite, we had the fried calamari, and a parmesan-cream cheese-roasted red pepper dip with pita chips. Everything on the menu appears to be prepared on the spot, this place is obviously not a Sysco (or similar) customer. The food was great, the service great. I’ll be back (to check out the window item!). 1022 Morrison, beside the Max route, thus the name.
